So you know you need a website but you’re really not sure how to go about it?
Where Do You Start?
I would start with gathering some thoughts about what you want your site to say about your business and write them down. It doesn’t need to be in complete sentences at this point. It can just be thoughts or words that tell the story of your business and what you have to offer. This could include your values, history, services or products, contact info, etc. Look at your business through the eyes of your potential customers and think about what is important for them to know. Remember to be clear and concise about what you are trying to convey.
Next I would put those thoughts into categories which will then be the content for your pages. Let’s say you wrote down the history of your business because you feel that it is interesting and essential to your potential customers for understanding who you are. That type of information would fall under an About Page. Likewise your contact information would fall under a Contact page. Continue this exercise until you have everything categorized.
Now that you have the information organized, create full sentences from your words or phrases and write all of the content for your site. I know it is easy to get caught up in what you want your site to look like but the real heart of the matter is that without content, your site would just be a series of blank boring pages. Take the time to develop it thoughtfully and don’t be afraid to ask a trusted friend or adviser to read the text to help you tell a consistent story in an easy to read manner. Developing great content will go a long way in helping you create a great website.
