Social mediaMost of the time we look at social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, or Pinterest as a waste of time and energy. You get sucked into reading updates and looking at images and then wonder where the time went. But did you know that they can be effective platforms for having conversations with your customers too?

Choose The Right Platform

I will say this till the day I die. You do not need to be on every social media platform. Regardless of what anyone tells you, trying to do an effective job on every platform will only end up in too many hours being wasted and you being frustrated. Choose the platform that your potential and current customers use. So how do you find this out? Ask people! It could be as easy as emailing out a survey or asking people when they checkout online or at your physical location. All you need to do is collect the information and then review what you have discovered.

So Now What Do I do?

So let’s say you have found out that the majority of your customers use Facebook and are on it almost every day. The next step is to learn how to create a business Facebook page. Google it. There are a ton of resources available that will walk you through it step by step. Even Facebook has their own tutorial. Read up on how to attract an audience so your page is not a ghost town.

Commit Yourself To Posting & Responding

Now comes the hard part. You need to commit yourself to posting content on a regular basis and responding to comments every business day. This mean that you need to have content prepared ahead of time using a media calendar or other organized system. If you are hoping that you will just magically come up with content the day that you need to post something, then you are looking for unicorns.

A Key Point To Remember

One of the most important things to remember is that your social media page is one of the most publicly accessible marketing tools that your business has. You will get loyal supporters AND critics.  Everything you post and respond to should be professional. Do not get personal. Stay calm regardless of the situation and you will come out on top.
